Frequently Asked Questions

What is spot UV coating?
Spot UV is a clear, glossy coating applied to selected areas of a printed piece rather than the entire surface. It creates visual and tactile contrast between coated and uncoated areas — highlighting logos, images, or text with a high-gloss finish while the surrounding area remains matte or uncoated.
What is the difference between UV coating and lamination?
UV coating is a liquid finish cured instantly with ultraviolet light. It is thinner than lamination, fully recyclable, and available in spot or flood applications with specialty effects like glitter, texture, and raised surfaces. Lamination is a plastic film bonded to the sheet — it adds more physical protection but is not recyclable in the same waste stream and does not offer the same range of decorative effects.
Can you UV coat uncoated paper?
Flood UV cannot be applied to uncoated stocks — the coating will absorb unevenly and produce a blotchy finish. Spot UV on uncoated stock is possible in some cases but requires testing. For best results, UV coatings should be applied to coated paper or board.
What specialty UV effects are available?
Beyond standard gloss and matte flood coatings, we offer spot gloss, glitter, reticulated (textured), raised image, sand texture, and glow-in-the-dark UV effects. These specialty finishes add tactile and visual dimension to packaging, covers, and marketing materials.
